Breadfruit

Breadfruit is a timely socially engaged project using the Breadfruit to explore the wisdom carried through plant and human migration across millennia. Combining textile making, food and community conversation, the project will culminate in a final touring installation bringing community visionaries to share the last supper on earth.

The journey of the Breadfruit plant can be traced back to 2500BC and across four continents - carried by human hand on epic journeys including, in 1789, from the Pacific Islands to the Caribbean to feed enslaved Africans by order of the King.

Scientists now know that the hardy Breadfruit is the only plant designed to outlive the rising heat of the earth’s future. Somehow our 4000 year old migrating ancestors must have known this and carried this life-saving knowledge with them. What other knowledge do migrating people carry? How might we better value that wisdom? And now the human race is preparing for the final migration to the stars, how might this knowledge prepare us for a more aware arrival?

Gaylene  and collaborators will lead community conversations across the country using  textile making, story sharing and food to explore our own migratory wisdom. The project will culminate in a touring audio-visual installation that will bring together visionary communities to share  the last supper on earth.
